When I heard that the new "transitional" government had suddenly decided to decentralize the Federal Government, I almost lost my lunch. What happened to their statement that Tripoli is and always will be the capital of Libya? They have designated Benghazi as the new economic capital of Libya. So many of the most important departments in government will be based in Benghazi? This is totally unacceptable and will only lead to more strife among the Libyans.
Today the residents of Tripoli are in disarray and weak, but in the future, rest assured that they will turn things around and things will get very dicey if the People of Benghazi think they will run the show forever. Misratah has the weapons and the men to wield them. However, Tripoli has the numbers and once they get their act together, the rest of Libya will have to respect the fact that in a democracy, the majority rules.
I noticed a list of NTC members today and it was interesting that there were few, if any, members of the NTC from Tripoli. Why that's the case, I'm not sure but it bodes ill for the legitimacy of the NTC.

This is quite insulting, and actually a dull piece of writing; Benghazi boys?? correction is Benghazi Men!.. For once cities are becoming and making something out of themselves, and this shouldnt make "Tripoli" feel weak, however I must say this concludes the mentality of how self centered people must be if this is a threat. Libya consists of many cities not just one.. if this is how Tripoli think then they need one big wake up call to realise Gadaffi has gone and its time for everywhere to shine in Libya. Economical capital is a brilliant step for Libya and even if Tripoli has the population doesnt make them more significant than any other city. wow this "we are the capital" mentality is a let down.
ReplyDeleteAnd correction the majority of the NTC are from Tripoli, :@, plus democracy isnt ruled by the majority, its ruled by the liking of everyone not the one city and its population. such a dictatorship way of thinking this blog piece.
Such a let down reading this, decentralisation is definitely successful after reading this !

ReplyDeleteSince when has everyone ever been able to agree on what they like? A democracy is ruled by the majority. Each individual has equal say, but if a majority of individuals have one idea and a smaller population of others prefer a different idea, the former will obviously get their way. There's absolutely no way to establish a government based on the "liking of everyone."
